An easy way to understand metadata, is to think of it as data about data. It is the description of data that facilitates its ease of storage and retreaval. Common uses for metadata are to describe the following: the content of a digital asset, the encoding (zip, rar, mpeg, jpeg, gif, etc.), provenance (where and when the data was captured), who owns it, can access it and/or alter it. The following is not an exhaustive list, but does offer a good overview of the use of metadata.

Proxy Copy

The demands of multimedia on a management system are large, to say the least. Large image assets, such as high resolution video or pictures, require vast amounts of storage and bandwidth. The solution to offset these demands is the use of proxy copies. A proxy copy is a reference copy, of a much lower resolution than the original. This lessens the demand on the system by retrieving a proxy copy, which can then be used as reference material. Proxy copies may be created and stored at the time of storage or creation of the original media, or may be created on demand using transcoders (see explanation below).

Transcoding

Used in the creation of proxy copies (see above), transcoding is a digital to digital conversion from one method of encoding to another. It may be used on a system to transform unsupported media to a supported format. It may also be used, as noted above, to create lower quality versions of media to be used as reference copies. They may also be used to transform media record on obsolete equipment. Transcoding may be performed during searches for media and even during presentation of media.

Personal information should never be divulged casually; many times nowadays we are asked for our phone number or email address at the point of purchase. Do you feel comfortable reciting these things within earshot of other customers (*i.e. – strangers)? Likely not. Try and give the same confidentiality to your customers. If you do require personal information from your customers, exercise precaution and discretion. Computer screens should never be visible to anyone except the staff, information should never be repeated out loud back to the customer and unattended computers should be locked.

Maintain a company wide security policy -

A security policy should not serve as a threat to hang over the heads of employees. It should serve to educate staff on what measures are in place to protect them, for instance, email policy, internet access policy, network and database access, security regarding customer information, and what to do in case of an incident that violates any of your security policies.

The purpose of your security policy is to educate your employees about issues such as identity theft and data protection. It should include information on email policies (such as what email filters are in place and how to deal with suspicious email), computer network access, Internet use policies (such as how to increase browser security settings and safe practices, such as disconnecting from the ‘Net when they’re done using it), customer information protection strategies, and how to report incidents or violations. In other words, a manual of the issues involved with security and threats such as identity theft and what to do about them.

One of the many relevant and significant details regarding medigap insurance is an understanding of the enrollment period. Other features may be available depending on the insurance company one chooses to deal with.

Choosing the insurer is of the utmost importance, as the guarantee offered is only as good as the solvency of the company. If the company goes under, so does your money. Therefore it is important to only choose insurance companies with a long and stable track record. Some other possible disadvantages to annuities are having to pay for the guarantees (which you may not need), surrender periods that can make your money inaccessible for longer than you wish, or restrictions by the IRS that influence how money may be withdrawn from an annuity (some distributions may result in taxation or penalties).

Another pitfall to avoid is the overselling of annuities by banks. Employees at some banks act as agents for insurance companies and are motivated by commissions to sell you annuities. Sometimes this may be a good thing, if it is what you are looking for. Other times you may end up purchasing something you really didn’t need.
